Hi all, I was hoping that I could get some advice here. I have found a really good deal on pocket sprung mattresses but I want a wooden bedstead. I was looking in a shop yesterday and was told that pocket sprung mattresses have to be used with sprung bases (don't even know what this is) and that they are unsuitable for slatted bases. Any truth in this? S.

As a rule a pocket sprung mattress should have a base to go with it. some bases have a platform top i.e a solid flat board on the top of the base. others have what is called a sprung edge, a top containing springs. have a look at this page http://mattress.ie/Haven-2600-Divan-King-p-18076.html You can easily put a pocket sprung mattress on a wooden frame bed so long as the slats on bed frame are no more than 3inchs apart. this ensures that the springs have support. Pocket Sprung mattresses generally provide good support and comfort due to the fact that each individual spring can shape individually to the shape of your body. Thanks, Richard www.furniture.ie

hay there... i too had a sprung mattress on a slatted base... the only time i noticed that perhaps this kind of base was not the way forward was when i turn the mattress over when cleaning... the slates had left indentations in the mattress almost making a ribbed effect...

to counter act this i bought some more lats from the shop who sold me the mattress in the first place, making my bed base solid... only cost a few euro but has made the bed quiter when... canooodling.... and firmer also... the kids like to bounce on it too and i think its made it safer for them also...
