The Good Night Guide For Children

Written by Administrator August 03, 2006

It is a well-known fact that it is often impossible to get a good night's sleep on a poor bed. There are a variety of reasons why a bed can be poor - age, material and support are all factors. It is hard enough to cope without eight hours sleep when you are an adult and may be used to missing a few hours here and there. When it is a child that is sleep deprived, however, it is a different story.

As a parent, you have more than enough to contend with on a daily basis than most people so it is easy for the little things to be forgotten. One of those little things, more often than not, is the bed your child sleeps in. However, growing children need their beds replaced regularly. If you do buy the best sized bed for them in one instance, a few months later they are guaranteed to have outgrown it and need a new one. This can be an expensive process, but it can also give them the best possible start in life as they travel toward adulthood.

Poor sleep can affect a child's demeanour, ability to learn and general development. As a result, it is essential that you choose and buy a bed for your little one that suits his or her needs perfectly and promotes sleep rather than contributing to sleepless nights.

Buying the right bed for your child is important from the day they are born right up until they hit their early twenties. In other words, while they are still growing, certain factors have to be taken into consideration. Size is just one of them. For example, factors such as allergies and the potential for bedwetting have to be taken into consideration when you choose the mattress and material of the bedcovers you choose.

Caring for a bed when your child sleeps in it regularly can also be a chore.

Choosing a bed for a child is not as simple as most people may think, as I'm sure you understand if you have read this far. However, it is not only choosing a bed that poses a problem. Caring for it when your child sleeps in it regularly can also be a chore if you don't know how. There are so many things we all do without thinking about the consequences, such as sitting on the edge of a child's bed. Believe it or not, this can actually weaken the mattress and render the bed useless in trying to encourage a good night's sleep for a child. It also means the mattress has to be replaced more regularly. Again, this is only one of the aspects of care that you have to consider - but don't despair because help is at hand!

The British Sleep Council have published a leaflet called "The Good-Night Guide For Children" to help parents do what they can to ensure their children get a good night's sleep. It's a comprehensive guide that deals with effectively buying and caring for a child's bed. It is packed full of hints and tips as to what to look for in a child's bed. It also takes it one step further, highlighting the care of stains on a mattress and how to deal with sleep problems, for example.

In short, it is a complete illustrated guide. It details everything you need to know about children's beds from the moment you buy their first bed until the moment they stop growing and is well worth a read.
