IKEA Announces Plans For Dublin And Belfast Stores

Written by Administrator January 26, 2006

It was announced earlier today that IKEA plan to enter Ireland with two stores - one in Dublin and the other in Belfast. Subject to planning permission, 500 new jobs will be created at the Dublin store, which will be located in the Ballymun Regeneration zone.

Ikea hopes that up to 50% of its employees will come from the local areas and the company will work with FÁS, Ballymun Regeneration Limited (BRL) and the partnership and job centre groups in the area on specific training and up-skilling programmes to facilitate local employment.

The Dublin store will cover 30,500 sq m over two floors, and will have 1,500 car spaces. Planning application will be lodged shortly in Dublin. The store will also include a number of ancillary facilities for customers including a 500-seater restaurant, a bistro, a café and a Swedish Food Hall as well as a crèche to cater for young children while their parents are shopping.

The Belfast store will measure 25,800 m2, will employ 400 people, and will be located at the Holywood Exchange development on the outskirts of Belfast city. Ikea intends to open the Belfast store in late December this year.

IKEA has a network of 220 stores in 33 countries worldwide, 14 of which are in Britain.
