Log Cabins
Log cabins have been built for centuries in North America and Canada. Although traditional cabins have nearly died out, modern versions have become very popular. Log cabins are currently used for many purposes. Many people use them as vacation homes or to add an extra room to their house.
Where to buy a log cabin?
Many companies specialize in selling ready-made log cabins. Shomera is one of the most popular, but also quite expensive. Botanic Living is another Irish company selling log cabins, with many shops all over the country. They have different cabins to use as offices, therapy rooms, workshops, hobby rooms, games rooms or sauna rooms.
Other alternatives include Eurorooms, Irish Wood Style, Abwood and Woodford. All these have several shops in Ireland and provide a variety of styles and sizes to suit your particular needs.
Planning for log cabins
Log cabins do not always require planning. Some of them are part of the Domestic Garage exemption. The exemption covers those cabins which are under a certain floor area, are auxiliary to a dwelling house and are not used for dwelling. You are allowed to build entrances onto a public road without planning only if the road is under a certain width.
Log cabin insurance
Many people who have built a log house discovered that it's not as easy to insurance it as for a regular home. Many insurance companies charge more for log cabins. However, Allianz Direct and Orien Finlay are two Irish insurance companies that would give you a quote regardless of what type of home you own.
Either you build a log cabin yourself or buy a ready-made one, it will probably be a good investment. A log house is great as a teenage retreat, a therapy room or just some extra space for guests. Thanks to modern heating systems they are comfortable to use in any season.

I wish to relocate to Northern Ireland and live in a 3/4 bedroom log cabin on a plot of land I have there. I should be most grateful if you would send me as much info as possible about 3/4 bed log cabins. I would like to have a turf/grass roof, wood burning stove and underfloor heating if possible and would be prepared to do a lot of the work myself. I hope to hear from you soon. Regards Sue Kirby.

as regard 'cheap' log homes... we have built and supply original log homes, constructed from american western red cedar, fact is the cost of same is more than 'traditional block built' irish homes....
old saying, you get what you pay for... we can supply kit with construction training, or a complete package.....
regards Martin

I like to paint and write and need a space. I would also like to put my treadmill in the same place.
Don't have a lot of money to spend but it would have to be usable in winter and summer. I have a nice site for it at the back of my house.
