Furniture Designers
In the 20th century, furniture design was marked by the same revolution that transformed the face of all the other arts. The luxurious pieces of furniture with heavy carvings and flower motifs that were representative of earlier years were replaced by simplicity and clean lines. An influential figure was the Austrian designer Hoseph Hoffman, who founded the Wiener Werkstätte 1903 and produced cubical-shaped pieces of furniture.
Contemporary European trends
Contemporary European designers are inspired by two major styles in furniture making: the German Bauhus and the French Art Deco. These were the two most prominent forces that contributed to the development of 20th century furniture design.
The Bauhus was founded by Walter Gropius in 1919, in Germany. Marcel Breuer, one of its major designers, created the Wassily chair, made of steel tubing and canvas, as well as the cantivelered side chair, made of tubing with wood-framed seat and back panels.
Art Deco is originated in 1925 and got its name from an exposition of decorative arts held in Paris. Among the most famous art deco furniture designers were Louis Mahorelle, Pierre Chareau, Jacques Émile Ruhlmann and André Groult. They created abstract designed furniture in bold geometric shapes from exotic woods with lustrous finishes. The art deco style persisted until 1939 and had a revival during the 1970s and 80s.
Irish furniture designers
20th century Irish furniture is dominated by the clean, but often intricate lines from its Celtic heritage. It fits well both in an urban space and a rustic cottage. The Irish Furniture Designers Network (IFDN) is a group of contemporary designers who work on developing the art of furniture making both in Ireland and abroad. Here are a few of its members:
Lorraine Brennan is a young designer who launched her first collection, This is what I like, in 2000. Her furniture pieces are manufactured by four companies in Ireland and sold under the label of Fifty-Eight b. Lorraine's work reflects a balance between beauty and functionality. Some of her furniture pieces are on exhibit at the National Museum of Ireland.
Charles O'Toole graduated the National College of Art 7amp Design in 1994 and set up Charles Furniture while studying at the School of Architecture in Denmark. The company's philosophy is to create innovative pieces with a strong emphasis on quality.
John Doolin graduated from the National College of Art and Design in 1999 and set up Imbue Furniture Design. He is both a furniture designer and a furniture maker, and produces furniture pieces both for commercial and home use.
Gordon Byrne set up Gordon Byrne Design in 2002 in Dublin, manufacturing commercial interior furniture. Gordon has been an active designer during the past four years, exhibiting his works both in Ireland and abroad.
Kate Fine graduated from the National College of Art and Design in 1996 and set up Fine Design, originally producing original-looking mirrors and a small range of furniture and lighting. Her works are simple, but at the same time provide a sense of depth, innovation and style.
