Common Stains And How to Remove Them

Written by Administrator June 02, 2006

All kinds of stains are easier to remove when still fresh. Over time, stains on carpet or furniture can become permanent. There are a lot of cleaning products available on the market today. You should always begin with the least aggressive solution and move to stronger ones until you succeed in removing the stain.

Any product should be pre-tested on an inconspicuous part of the carpet before applying it to the stain. If you notice any changes in the carpet, try another cleaner. Another good practice is to use only white cloths in cleaning stains. Otherwise you may in fact transfer dye to the surface you are cleaning and this may be even harder to remove than the stain itself.

Fruit juice, jelly, jam or soda stains

Many fruit, jelly or soda stains can be removed using a mixture of 1/4 teaspoon of dish-washing detergent with a cup of warm water. Blot the spot with this solution and then rinse it with warm water. If the stain is still there, try mixing 2 tablespoons of ammonia with a cup of water, or blot the stain surface with a mixture of one cup of vinegar with one cup of water. Rinse with warm water.

Red wine

Red wine stains can usually be removed from a carpet with salt or white wine. Pour salt on the stain surface right away, but do not rub it. Rinse it with warm water after a couple of minutes. You can also pour some white wine to keep the stain from setting.

Candle wax

Candle wax from carpet can be removed with a paper towel and an iron. Before you begin the procedure, try to remove any excess wax using a brush or your own hands. Be careful not to damage the fibre. Afterwards, place the paper towel on the stain surface and set the iron at warm temperature. Make sure it is not too hot, as high temperatures can destroy synthetic fibres. Apply the warm iron to the paper towel. The wax will start to liquify and the towel will absorb it.

Many common stains in the house can be easily removed with a do-it-yourself approach. Always choose a quality cleaner if necessary and make sure you follow the instructions carefully.
