Buyer Beware - High Density Foam And Not Memory Foam

Written by Administrator October 27, 2006

There are many foam products available on the market and it can be quite difficult to choose the right one. The increased popularity of memory foam products has caused more and more companies to enter the memory foam industry. Different variations of "memory foam" are manufactured nowadays in multiple locations around the world. Because there are so many memory foam options on the market it is very important for you as a consumer to know all the details before purchasing memory foam online. There is, for example, an increase in low quality foam imports from Asian manufacturers.

Memory foam is one of the most special materials in the world. The material's properties stem from the unusual characteristics of its cell structure. Unlike standard foams that only partially compress when under pressure, memory foam cells fully compress when pressed upon by another force, then spring back to their original shape very slowly. The name comes from this particular characteristic: the foam appears to remember the shape of the last object placed upon its surface. Memory foam will mould itself to any surface, and hold that shape as long as the object remains pressed to it; thus pressure points on a users back, neck and legs are reduced. No other material has the custom shaping property of memory foam.

The quality of a piece of Memory Foam is determined by its density. The denser the material the heavier and firmer it is to the touch. Also, denser products usually take a lot longer to recover after they are compressed and are considered to be more supportive than less dense memory foam products. Because of this slower recovery, and increased support, denser foams are more expensive than their less dense counterparts. Likewise, the denser the memory foam, the higher the manufacturing and fabrication costs.

The density alone will not tell you everything you need to know about the feel or comfort of the memory foam itself. In it simplest terms, density simply tells you how much the particular piece of memory foam weighs. Each memory foam brand has its own unique feel and recovery time.

What is most important when you are looking for memory foam is to make sure the product is made from "memory foam" and not just "foam". There are many products that try to copy the memory foam qualities but the difference is considerable.
